Recently, I needed some bleach.  (To remove a varnish stain from carpet!).  Of course,

I walked away from this part of the job for 20 minutes, while I worked on another aspect of the job.  When I came back, the varnish stain looked the same except it’s now even darker from the bleach solution I had applied. 

I opened the bleach bottle again and sniffed it.  There was absolutely no bleach odor.

excusing myself from the job, I grabbed the bleach bottle and headed back to the store.

When I got to the store, there was no problem returning the bleach.

I found the right isle and pulled another bottle of bleach off the shelf.  This time, I opened it and sniffed.  Hmmm.  Absolutely no odor.  I did this to nine other bottles before I found one which smelled like bleach.

I had the front girl page management.  Two men met me back at the bleach section. Both of them were top management.  I explained the problem with the bleach.  They both looked at me like they didn’t understand a word I was saying.  They were nice about sniffing each bottle I opened for them.  Finally, when I handed them the potent

bleach smelling bottle, they got it!  The bleach had sat too long in some warehouse before it was delivered to their store.  It had fizzed out, gone flat, died or whatever you want to call it.  The last thing I heard them say to each other was,” have the stock boy pull all these bottles off the shelf “.

You too,huh?  And you and you and you.  Gosh, I thought I was the only one.

I called the local carpet cleaner in the phone book.  Dozens to choose from, but

I settled on one little guy.  His ad made it seem like he knew what he was all about.

He touted his abilities and seemed sure of himself. 

Jeff showed up.  Ear pierced, and tattoos all down his arms.  He was overweight

and his shirt was out. He had on baggy shorts, reaching below his knees.  They made him look like an over stuffed midget and I wondered what I had gotten myself into.

And oh yes, his hat, facing backwards and pulled down over his head. 

I was shocked and not sure whether I should laugh or close the door.  But Jeff

introduced himself and I couldn’t turn him away now, he had driven all the way

to my house from somewhere. 

Jeff had already given me a job cost over the phone, based on square footage.  I

still don’t understand how they can do that because every job isn’t the same.  I

guess somehow they figure it all out.

Jeff didn’t bother coming in to see the job.  I offered to let him in, but he said he was

on a schedule and had to get right to the job.  I told him the door was open and to

come in when he was ready.

I went out onto my porch and watered the plants.  I could hear the roar of some loud

machine, but I didn’t think about it anymore.  I just went about my business until Jeff

walked out into the porch.  I smiled at him and said, “can I help you”?  “Yeah, I’m

all done”.  Really surprised, I said, “impossible”. 

He really insisted he was done.  I looked at my watch, he hadn’t been on the job any

more than 20 minutes.  I can’t even vacuum my house that fast!  I walked into every

room while Jeff followed me.  I did see marks through out the carpet like when I

vacuum.  “Alright,” and I handed him the check.
